Difference Between Standard Definition and HDTV Plasma

It is a common misconception that all plasma screens have the ability to display HDTV images. In reality, there are actually two different types of plasma displays: EDTV/enhanced definition and HDTV/high definition.

EDTV plasma are less costly, but do not display images in higher HDTV resoultions. Most EDTV's will display 850x480 as a maximum resolution.

HDTV screens are more costly. However, these screens display true HDTV resolution at 1024x768 or higher.

Many manufacturers offer the same screen with and without HDTV capability. Be sure to verify your choice when comparing. As of 11/28/05, HD screens are about $600-$800 more expensive.

From our experience, the HDTV screens are worth the extra cost for digital signage. HDTV does a better job of displaying small and large fonts on the screen. Images also are much clearer and offer a greater "wow factor" for advertising or communicating with customers or employees. However, with proper setup, EDTV screens can also do an excellent job of displaying messages as well.
